A visit to the Colosseum


Symbol of the history of Rome all over the world: the Colosseum, for the ancient Romans the Flavian Amphitheater, born from the will of Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD. and inaugurated then by his son Tito.
The name ‘Colosseum’ is due to the presence of a colossal statue of Nero, because the area where it stands is that of the imposing Domus Aurea, home of the emperor who built it after the great fire in Rome.

History of the Colosseum

Unesco heritage since 1980 and considered one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Colosseum was used after its construction for the games of the ancient Romans: it hosted the fights that involved the famous gladiators.
Events that gathered every stratum of the population of the Ancient Rome: from senators to slaves passing through the artisans and the traders. The events entry was free; the philosophy of the panem et circenses was just to ingratiate people with these games.
In addition to the battles of the gladiators, inside the Colosseum there were also hunting performances, the well-known venationes; the naumachie, representations of great naval battles during which the Colosseum was filled with water. In addition, capital executions were carried out there.
